July 19 Day 1 Sunday We depart Chicago aboard the famed ”Empire Builder” train on a scenic overnight journey. Tonight, Phyllis Dale’s “ Entering My 70th Year Birthday Party” will be celebrated in our private club car. No gifts allowed. You being with her on this day will be a gift she will always remember and cherish…and you will too!
Overnight on the Empire Builder. Seats are very comfortable and larger than traveling in first class on an international flight. Upgrades may be purchased for a bedroom compartment *.
July 20 Day 2 Monday Our group arrives in East Glacier today. The hotel is a two-minute walk from the station. Overnight at Glacier Park Lodge, one of the great historic lodges built by the Great Northern Railroad and the largest log structure in the world.
July 21 Day 3 Tuesday We depart this morning aboard on red open-air “jammer” busses for the stunning trip over the famed Going to the Sun Highway across the Continental Divide. Later today, shimmering Lake McDonald where a boat cruise is enjoyed.Overnight at Glacier Park Lodge in Montana (B, D)
July 22 Day 4 Wednesday Today is a special treat. We leave for enchanting Fairmont Hot Springs. Nestled between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone this idyllic setting features a variety of soothing mineral pools (mineral pool admission is included). There is also golf and a fine spa with massage. Overnight at Fairmont Hot Springs Hotel in Montana (B, D)
July 23 Day 5 Thursday After breakfast, we depart for the Gates of the Mountain Cruise, a lovely two-hour excursion in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains between Helena and Great Falls, Montana. Aboard an open-air boat (covered in case of rain), we’ll glide through magnificent country with great towering walls of limestone seeing bighorn sheep, mountain goats and eagles among other wildlife. We then head off to Virginia City, Montana for a ride on the Alder Gulch Short Line Railroad. Later today, we arrive at Lake Yellowstone to begin our two-night stay. July 24 Day 6 Friday We begin the day visiting Yellowstone National Park. We will see Upper and Lower Falls, Hayden Valley, Old Faithful, Fountain Paint Pot and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Overnight at Lake Yellowstone Hotel in Wyoming (B)
July 25 Day 7 Saturday We drive south today to spectacular Grand Teton National Park, a landscape rich with jagged mountains, glaciers, pristine lakes and amazing wildlife including bison, moose and antelope. Here too, like in Yellowstone, we enjoy a two-night stay with plenty of free time. The resort is close to shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Overnight at the Snow King Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. (B, L)
July 26 Day 8 Sunday Today, we tour Jackson Hole with the highlight being an afternoon float trip on the Snake River. Grand Teton National Park protects stunning mountain scenery and a diverse array of wildlife. The is the focal point of the park, the youngest range in the Rocky Mountains. Overnight at the Snow King Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.. (B)
July 27 Day 9 Monday Departing Jackson Hole this morning, we travel south, stopping at the Oregon Trail Historical Center and then traveling along the before an afternoon arrival in Salt Lake City. July 28 Day 10 Tuesday Depart Salt Lake City for Moab and a visit to Canyonlands National Park. Canyonlands preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas and buttes by the Colorado River and its tributaries. The rivers divide the park into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze and the rivers themselves, another spectacular day of scenery. July 29 Day 11 Wednesday We tour Arches National Park. The forces of nature have acted in concert to create the greatest density of natural arches in the world, over 2100 amazing formations of vaarying colors. Throughout the park, rock layers reveal millions of years of deposition, erosion and other geologic events. Tonight is our Farewell Dinner. Overnight at Red Cliffs Lodge in Moab, Utah (B, D)
July 30 Day 12 Thursday
All Aboard! We board the “California Zepher” this morning in our private rail cars for the epic daylight passage through the Colorado Rockies and traveling though the Grand Junction and Glenwood Canyon for a journey described by the BBC as one of the top ten train rides in the world.
July 31 Day 13 Friday We cross the Mississippi River after breakfast and are soon traveling through the rich farmland of Illinois with an afternoon arrival at Union Station in Chicago.
